Go now
That morning, the sun had just risen over the eastern horizon as I stood on the shore of Kuta Beach, Bali. The cool sea breeze touched my face, while the sound of crashing waves echoed continuously. It was my very first time trying surfing.
For a long time, I had wanted to learn how to surf. I often watched surfers glide across the waves with confidence and skill. However, whenever I saw the size of the waves, fear would always creep into my mind.
That day, accompanied by an instructor, I began learning the basics of surfing. I was taught how to lie on the board, paddle properly, and stand up with the correct technique.
"Don't be afraid to fall," the instructor said with a smile. "In surfing, falling is part of the learning process."
Several times I tried to stand on the board, but I kept falling into the water. My hair was soaked, my body was tired, but I refused to give up.
As the sun climbed higher in the sky, a small wave approached. The instructor signaled for me to start paddling.
"Go, now!" he shouted.
I paddled with all my strength. I could feel the board begin to move as the wave pushed it forward. Quickly, I attempted to stand up. My legs trembled for a moment, but this time I managed to keep my balance.
The surfboard glided across the surface of the water. The wind rushed against my face, and the sound of the wave was so close. I smiled widely. It lasted only a few seconds, but to me it felt extraordinary.
When I finally fell into the water, what could be heard was not a complaint, but joyful laughter.
"Congratulations!" the instructor shouted from a distance. "That was your first wave!"
I raised my hand excitedly. At that moment, I realized that surfing is not only about conquering the waves, but also about overcoming fear and believing in yourself.
Since that day, whenever I look at the ocean, I always remember my first wave—the wave that taught me that courage often begins with one small step: simply trying.
